  • August 31-September 1 CELEBRATION in Winnipeg of the 125th Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s speech at the 1893 Parliament of World Religions in Chicago with keynote speaker Swami Purnatmananda, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission (Swami Vivekananda’s Ancestral House and Cultural Centre).
  • VSE member, Shreela Chakrabartty, screened the documentary, SPIRITS depicting the portion of Swami Vivekananda’s journey across Western Canada on his way to Chicago to attend the Parliament of the World’s Religions during the Chicago World Fair. More than a century later a friendship emerged between the South Asian community and the local indigenous community around the stewardship of Swami Vivekananda’s commemorative bust statue in the former Canadian Pacific Railway Station building in Winnipeg. Remarkably, the same message that Swami Vivekananda carried in the 1800s while indigenous practices were being outlawed, was the message of harmony and unity that came to light that day.
